Definition of balance sheet:

A balance sheet is a document that outlines a company’s assets, liabilities and shareholders’ equity at a particular point in time. The balance sheet informs investors of what the company owns, has borrowed and the amount shareholders have invested.

The following formula is used to compile a balance:

Assets = Liabilities + Shareholders’ Equity
